When Lexi Witwer first came to the University of North Florida, she declared a biomedical major. She quickly discovered in her first semester that the biomed program was a lot more demanding than the science classes she loved in high school. Now, as a junior, she’s most of the way through a communication degree instead, with a focus in public relations. Lexi is still passionate about science and nature, and has hopes represent ‘green’ companies in the future.
Two things brought Lexi to the UNF campus - the nature, and the location.
“I was drawn to UNF because it was close to home,” she said. “I really value my family.”
Her favorite part of campus is the nature trails which she walks or runs through frequently, but Lexi spends most of her time outside of school outdoors anyway. All her hobbies are nature-oriented: backpacking, hiking, camping, running, and surfing. She has explored almost every park in the Jacksonville and St. Augustine area, and found the hidden gems. Her favorite unknown spot is the Guana preserve and trails.
“There are a ton of trails back there off A1A,” she said. “I think most people think it's just swamp, but it's really beautiful.”
Although Lexi doesn’t expect to graduate until the spring of 2022, she is already working at an internship in her field. Three years from now she would like to have moved up at the same company, creating public relations content, and as long as it’s safe, traveling the world.
